Hey buddy we totally agree on some things. I was unsure if you were actually trolling or serious. I still run GNOME 2.x at the moment as I've not had a chance to upgrade to 3.x and mutter works like crap on nvidia cards (nouveau can't power the 2 30" monitors on my desk vertically).

But it is something new and innovative, if users all cry foul, it will be fixed in a later release. For now, I maintain hope that it will be a superior desktop experience. The shell javascript console is awesome btw. Just like how in open source forks are a good thing, this is something different. Lessons will be learned and software will evolve.

Like Joe Dirt says, "Keep on keepin' on!"

Sorry. I didn't think I was trolling.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll

It was meant as something lighthearted in response to your lighthearted (surely) crack comparison.

In any case, this desktop metaphor switch took many of us long-time GNOME users by surprise, especially when it became clear that the traditional desktop everyone's gotten used to is actually left to bitrot.

I also thought I made a point of wishing the new Shell metaphor success (where, I don't honestly know) and the last line was purely a question about the future of GTK-developers who still see value in the traditional desktop workflow and design.

But hey, I apologize for the "trolling" and refrain from further comments. Feels weird to be an outsider now, after some ten years of Gnoming (well gnomes vs trolls is an old debate) and still having 2.x merrily blasted on my Debian desktop...

Loving GNOME is like loving crack?

Well exposure certainly appears to have made the leading GNOME devs lose touch with reality (aka actual users)!

2.x FTW! (-:

It is of course their call and I do hope it gets somewhere eventually. Like maybe on some GNOME(3)-sponsoring corporations' small devices.

Not sure what GTK and desktop-centric developers ought to make of this though. But if it works like crack...
